The beatification of Archbishop Profittlich will take place on September 6, at 11 in Freedom Square.
The beatification of Archbishop Profittlich was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis.
The reason for this was that the beatification is not only a decision of the Estonian Catholic Church, but of the universal Catholic Church, represented by the Pope of Rome. Therefore, the canonization and beatification cannot take place until a new Pope is elected. Now Pope Leo XIV has been elected and has given permission for the beatification ceremony to be held on September 6, in Estonia.
This is a historic event for Estonia and the Estonian people. Archbishop Profittlich, following Pope Pius XII’s suggestion and staying true to himself and God, decided to share the common fate of so many Estonians in the period following the Soviet occupation of Estonia.
Profittlich stayed in the country alongside the people and Church that he loved so much. Even though he had the opportunity to leave for his native Germany, he remained faithful to his vocation and God until the end. However, this led to his martyrdom in Kirov prison in Soviet Russia on February 22, 1942.
Bishop Philippe Jourdan: "The beatification of our Archbishop Martyr Eduard Profittlich is a message of hope and optimism for all of Estonian society."
At the end of the mass, all victims of Soviet deportations will be commemorated on Freedom Square by the ecumenical prayer with the Christian Church representatives.
Admission to the Mass is free and open to all.
More detailed information about the organization of the ceremony and liturgical preparations is on the website: www. profittlich.eu.
We ask you to keep this date free and begin to prepare in prayer for this great day of grace now.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On April 21, Pope Francis went to be with his heavenly Father. We have all experienced the day of his death and funeral with great grief. Especially since he visited us, in Tallinn, six years ago. With his death, a special time began in the Church, which is called Sede Vacante, meaning we currently do not have a Pope and we are waiting for the election of a new Pope.
Therefore, the Holy See announced on April 22 that all planned beatification and canonization ceremonies will be suspended until a new Pope is elected. Only then will the new Pope confirm the canonizations or beatifications ceremonies.
All could can confession before the Holy Week on Friday, 11. aprill 2025 in St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral. Our priests are taking confessions in several languages. Holy week programm for 2025 is here: HOLY WEEK 2025.
