Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

A year ago, on September 26, 2024, the Catholic Church in Estonia received a great gift when the Holy Father Francis elevated the Apostolic Administration of Estonia to the Diocese of Tallinn and appointed me as the first bishop of the new diocese. It was a historic moment! We know that the Diocese of Tallinn was already established once, in the distant past in 1219, but ceased its activities after the Reformation, like other Estonian Catholic dioceses. On November 1, 1924, Pope Pius XI officially re-established the Catholic Church in Estonia, but the situation of the Catholic community at that time did not yet allow for the establishment of a diocese. A hundred years later, Pope Francis’ decision was undoubtedly a sign of trust for Estonian Catholics, confirming that God sees our faith, our daily striving to live in Christ and witness to the Gospel.

The history of our country and the Church has entered a new and joyful chapter. On September 6, 2025, at Freedom Square in Tallinn, Archbishop Eduard Profittlich, the shepherd and martyr of our Church, was beatified.

This day was a great gift not only for Estonian Catholics, but for our entire nation. I have always remembered that when Pope Francis came to Tallinn, on September 24, 2018, he asked about Archbishop Profittlich and then said in Italian “Santo Subito” (may he be made a saint immediately). It is beautiful to think that in the same place where Pope Francis celebrated Mass in Tallinn, almost exactly 7 years later, the new Pope’s representative celebrated the Mass for the beatification of Blessed Eduard.

On 21 June, Pope Leo XIV confirmed the new date for the beatification of Archbishop Profittlich, 6 September 2025. This will be  the first beatification in Estonian history.
 
Due to the death of Pope Francis , that celebration was postponed. May, we had to change not only the date, but also the location, which is now Vabaduse väljak. This is a major challenge for us. As the beatification will take place 4 months later than was planned, it will also increase  the costs. We are expecting thousands of people to attend the beatification Mass, and many European pilgrims have already booked a trip for the occasion! Organising such an event (building the altar and stage, video and audio equipment, TV coverage, etc....) requires a lot of work and costs, but it is necessary if we want our first beatification to be visible and to speak to Estonian society. This event is a special blessing from God, and especially in this year, which is the Jubilee Year of the whole Catholic Church. In addition to Archbishop Profittlich, we also remember the 23,000 Estonians who died in prison camps.
 
Therefore, we still need and ask for your help and support, especially now that only a few weeks separate us from this great event.

The Diocese of Tallinn announces that those planning a Jubilee pilgrimage to Rome in October 2025, the Holy See has confirmed today that the meeting with the Holy Father Leo XIV will take place as planned on Friday, October 24, at 9:00.

On the Plenary Indulgences in the Diocese of Tallinn in 2025

On the occasion of the Jubilee Year
Based on the Bull of His Holiness Pope Francis Spes non confundit (9 May 2024), which declares 2025 a Holy Jubilee Year, and the Decrees of the Paenitentiaria Apostolica (13 May 2024), which stipulate the conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year, and based on Canons 87 §1 and 381 §1 of the Code of Canon Law,
— caring for the spiritual well-being of Catholics in Estonia (explanations on the concept of indulgences can be found in the Catholic Prayer Book, p. 59 et seq.).
— wishing to give those who, for various reasons, cannot make the pilgrimage to Rome, the opportunity to share in the graces of the Jubilee Year,
— emphasizing our common religious journey and confession on the soil of our homeland,
I decide the following:
